This forum should feel welcome for all members, whether they love the Aquarium, or think there is huge room for improvement.

This thread, specifically, is SUPPOSED to be criticism and/or praise for the 5 new fish created by an artist OTHER than Jim. The honest and open reactions here will set the tone for future additions of this nature.

We want to know how people would react if, for instance, more than 50% of the freshwater fish were created by artists at Prolific. That would be some controversy...

There is always room for improvement, but like i said before it took 6 days to build Rome, give em a chance.

Digital Lungfish 04-09-2003 12:18 AM

Thanks Reichart, Morgan, and Tiny, you guys understand where I'm coming from and I appreciate that. Anyway, sorry if I caused our thread to stray from it's original topic guys.

Ok, this poll has been up for 3 weeks now. Let's try to get some statistics from it. vBulletin's poll system does not come with a grouping feature, so I'm breaking out the calculator. :D

Satisfaction (per fish):
Blue Ring Angel 34/79 (43%)
Imperator Angel 43/79 (54%)
Redfin Butterfly 41/79 (52%)
Rock Beauty Angel 31/79 (39%)
Squarespot Anthias 35/79 (44%)
Other Artists besides Jim:
Creating fish & special creatures ~ 38/79 (48%)
Creating fish ~ 44/79* (56%)
Neither ~ 16/79** (20%)

*Non-duplicated combined votes from choices 1 & 2
**3-way votes counted towards choice #3

I expect there is a large margin of error.

I hope that the future fish of this aquarium will have more colors to them than blue and yellow.Like green fish and red fish and grey, etc.

I like them all but especially the rock beauty angel. I love black fish or ones with significant black portions. I would love to see mollies when there is a freshwater aquarium. They were my favorites when I had a real aquarium.

I was a bit surprised that all adult fish were chosen.

Has Jim rejected alot of artists trying to get new fish getting added to the aquarium? What kinds of things does he look for before he will except it?

Jim Sachs 06-17-2003 12:08 AM

I'd really rather that no one else adds fish, since that's the only fun part for me. It's like going to all the trouble of growing wheat, grinding it into flour, baking the bread, and someone else comes along and eats the sandwich.

feldon34 06-17-2003 01:05 AM

Now that everyone's plates seem to be getting bigger, maybe you'll make more detailed sandwiches? :)

Wizwad 06-17-2003 06:34 AM

With more fillings!

I like this metaphor! :D

feldon34 06-17-2003 10:28 AM

And controversial sandwiches too. :)

patscarr 06-17-2003 10:31 PM

Is it one of those huge "Dagwood" kind of sandwiches?

I'm new here, so please forgive if I overstep any boundaries here by asking a few questions.

I'll be purchasing my first Marine Tank Screensaver hopefully by next payday, and have been wondering if there's a place to view everything one gets when ordering? I'd like to see what sort of plants and other goodies come along with the package if possible. I have been enjoying the 'demo' so much that I'm getting anxious to finally own my very own fully functional program.

Something else I've been wondering about; are there any plans on making more elaborate backgrounds for the Tanks? There is another program ( the 'sim aqaurium') but the fish are not as lovely and natural moving as Jim's are. What I do like about the other program, though, is the way they show sunlight filtering through the top of the tank, and the depth is done so well, fading off the way real underwater worlds do. Other than those 2 things, I just am not happy enough with these things to want this 'other' program. That's why I've joined Jim's fans and followers here, because this is by far the most beautiful and realistic aquarium program I've seen in the last 10 years. Hopefully I'll be able to add the Goldfish and the Freshwater Screensavers soon too!

No plants, just 23 more fish.

The Marine Aquarium is Jim Sachs' project and every indication is, we will see an updated background in the future.

SereneScreen Marine Aquarium is a personal fishtank, not a reflection of the ocean. To do an ocean simulation, I think Jim feels he would have to make too many compromises or require a top-of-the-line videocard.

Jim is working on the Freshwater now and the programmers and artist on the Goldfish project seem to be on early summer hiatus but I figure we'll see a new version soon.

and Welcome to the forum!!

phauxxee 06-22-2003 12:40 PM

Thank you for all the information, and the Welcome, Feldon.

Of course, anything that's going to require I have to update my NVidia GeForce MX 440 again (?) is not something I look forward to. All these bells and whistles get quite expensive and have kept me here in the background for 2 years just trying to upgrade my own computer so I could one day use this program :)

BTW, here's another site that has some lovely images for anyone who may not have found this site yet... but I kind of doubt that it's possible to find a site that all of you haven't found already by now!

feldon34 06-22-2003 01:30 PM

A GeForce MX 440 is more than enough for any forseeable screen savers from Jim Sachs. (famous last words!)

Tornado Tom 07-01-2003 10:26 PM

almost real ehhhh! Great looking fishies.
