Bring Back the Climbing Starfish
Having recently upgraded to 3.0, the first thing I noticed was the starfish no longer appears on the glass (well, that and the fact that there are no more changing light levels). I'd love to see that starfish on the glass again. Developers: please?https://www.feldoncentral.com/forums...milies/lol.gif
The "developers" is Jim Sachs. It's on his To Do list. Oh, and welcome to the forums. :) :)
The two items are related. Since there has never been a transition animation of the starfish climbing from the floor onto the glass, it needed total darkness to mask the jump. Without Automatic Lights, there is no more total darkness. A transition animation is on the To-Do list.

I'll consider it.

An option setting is welcome :)

Why would a Starfish need to open a clam?
If it gets peckish.
At least, let the starfish move fast as previous version.

"Some species take advantage of the great endurance of their water vascular systems to force open the shells of bivalve mollusks such as clams and mussels, and inject their stomachs into the shells. Once the stomach is inserted inside the shell it digests the mollusk in place. The cardiac stomach is then brought back inside the body, and the partially digested food is moved to the pyloric stomach. Because of this ability to digest food outside of its body, the sea star is able to hunt prey that are much larger than its mouth would otherwise allow including arthropods, and even small fish in addition to mollusks." Don't sound as innocent as they look now do they? They are a huge pest for the commercial oyster farmers. They can't even be chopped up and returned to the sea because they regenerate from parts. |
Now i'm just scared.
Jim's starfish is a vegetarian variety.. It would open the clam just to show it can
Maybe there can be an option for it to open a coconut.
What do you think of this giant coconut crab?
http://www.magazine13.com/giant-coconut-crab/ Their life is marine only as larvae, so these could be put on the Whishlist for MA.:D |
Wow, that picture of one climbing a trash can is enough to give me nightmares!
Naw, throw that big ol' bug into a pot of boiling water with some pickling spice and plate him up with a nice slice of rare prime rib and you got some top shelf surf and turf right there.
Here is a cool video I found about sea stars: http://www.marthas-vineyard-vacation...rfish-eat.html There are several other sea star videos also on the right side of that page The scallops are not defensless to the stars attack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQ6tC...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6Qsm...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XqWbsvAm4A Sea star regeneration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7cXe...eature=related Nadine the expert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMoH21YjINE |

Those crabs are creepy. Some interesting links, FrankGuy. Here's my latest starfish pics taken at the aquarium. One is taken when they have their mouths full of food and seem to suction to the glass to eat. Then a couple ones of really skinny orange ones looking at their refections at the top of the water. And a couple in poses you can project your own interpretation of what they're doing.

I think that last one is the funniest.... :TU: ..... How about reproducing that, Jim? ... :)
That's the beauty of photography - you can get away with anything, because it really happened. If my starfish did that, I'd be a laughingstock.
So......................No cartwheels across the bottom of the tank huh? ;)

Yes!
Yes, yes, yes ... believe it or not, this was one of our favorite features!
I don't even see the starfish. Where is it hidden?
It's in the flat area at the left of the tank. (Assuming it's not de-selected in Fish Settings.)
Sorry but it's just not there! And it's not de-selected in Fish Settings. What could be going on? Is there another setting that I missed?
Is it possible that you have the Auto Pan option disabled?
Try pressing the Left Arrow key on your keyboard. |

[Just speculating that it might be an issue related to version or something...] |
try going into wireframe mode - "W" and checking. It's sometimes easier to spot in that mode!
Could you post a screenshot of the left side of your tank?
Looks like the last starfish has to go potty and is holding it in
Looks like you have to have the Auto Pan option enabled. Then you'll see the starfish once about every minute.
If you don't have the Auto Pan option enabled, you might only see about 1/3 of the aquarium!

Yes: when Auto Pan is enabled I'll see the Starfish. No: I'll only see it once every minute or so. No: When Auto Pan is not enabled, I'll never see the Starfish. |
You could use the arrow keys to position the view to include the Starfish. - Or you could wait for the Starfish to come into view, (once it start moving again)...... I think there is a saying that goes... You can't have your cake and eat it. ... :)
I thought the expression was Out of sight, out of mind.

[The design was for a wide tank, with panning. The ability to turn off panning was put in (as I recall) because some people wanted to be able to turn it off. ] |

Then use the arrow keys to position the view to include the Starfish.
