Please add a user customisable exit button

Please please please add a user customizable exit button. I run the screensaver on a windows media center pc. The old aquarium would exit on any of the buttons I pressed on the remote - eg. start media center (otherwise known as the green button), or the back button (i think it's mapped to backspace). Now with the version 3 beta, none of my remote buttons will exit the screen saver (seems only Escape key will exit). Alternatively please add an option to disable all hotkeys and allow any keyboard key to wakeup screensaver. I love this product so much I paid for the upgrade without even trying it. But now it's useless for me like this.

Do the remote buttons work if you turn on Exit On Mouse Move?

hololo 03-17-2009 11:38 AM

And release new beta or final 3.0 :)

Jim Sachs 03-17-2009 01:01 PM

I'm not quite sure what "final 3.0" means. Are people waiting for me to guarantee that I will never add or improve anything again?

Tried that and it didn't help.

Jim Sachs 03-17-2009 07:07 PM

I'm trying to picture what would be different between 2.6 and 3.0, regarding what causes an exit. The only thing that I could think of was the fact that Exit on Mouse Move defaulted to ON with the old program, and now (temporarily) defaults to OFF.

Edgar 03-17-2009 11:49 PM

The problem is more likely that SC_CLOSE message does not try to exit.
We need to call the WM_CLOSE on that message.

Jim Sachs 03-18-2009 12:19 AM

OK, I'll take care of it.

Royce 03-19-2009 02:37 AM

One other thing I'd like to point out is that ALT+F4 is ignored. That used to work on 2.6.

I hope a new version can be released soon. Version 3 looked glorious on my 50" plasma. :)

Jim Sachs 03-19-2009 09:15 AM

What's ALT+F4 again?

321liftoff 03-19-2009 10:14 AM

Alt+F4 is a windows keyboard shortcut to close the active window/application.

You can try it on your favorite application. If it's your programming environment, just make sure that you try it AFTER you save all your awesome updates to the clams.

Jim Sachs 03-19-2009 10:32 AM

What a cumbersome and arcane way of exiting the program. Why not just hit Esc, or right-click/Exit, or have Exit-on-Mousemove turned on?

feldon34 03-19-2009 11:34 AM

If Esc was all you had to press to completely close a program, using computers with modern operating systems would be a nightmare.

It would be possible to get completely kicked out of banking apps, chat software, development environments, Microsoft Word, etc. by pressing 1 key.

Alt-F4 just difficult enough to type that nobody will accidentally do it, and it has been the Windows standard since 1994. For 15 years, all Windows software has been designed to accept the Alt-F4 keystroke to exit. By the way, in Firefox, you can close individual tabs with Ctrl-F4. :)

Edgar 03-19-2009 07:21 PM

Alt-F4 is a shortcut for CloseWindow. SC_CLOSE is the message the app will see.

dwax 03-19-2009 08:25 PM

I have Exit On Mouse Move turned off. I have a Razer Copperhead mouse. If I press themiddle button (Scroll) the program will exit.

You're forgetting my original problem. I am doing this from a remote control. The buttons that make most sense to exit the screensaver are backspace (media center remotes use this as the back key - same as the browser) and my custom exit button (which transmits ALT+F4).

Both of these key combinations worked just fine on 2.6. Exiting via Escape key is a horrible concept (nice little summary provided by feldon33 :)). Please provide additional options!

Jim Sachs 03-21-2009 10:33 AM

OK, I'll look into it.

Royce 07-07-2009 05:10 PM

Hi,

It's been some time and the latest beta I downloaded still has this issue.. any progress on this?

I'd really like to start using version 3, seeing as I paid for it! :)

aann 08-17-2009 11:33 AM

I agree that Alt+F4 to close the screen saver is good behaviour. The Beta10d MA3 handles it in windowed mode, but not full screen
[edit]seems like an "[ ] exit on keypress" option would solve it to everyone's liking[/edit]

As mention earlier, "Alt-F4" to close a window/application is standard windows behavior (and has been for a decade and a half). This key combination should work regardless of which mode the screen saver is in.

The "exit on keypress" option seem like a reasonable request as well (assuming that is defaulted off) that shouldn't be too hard to implement.

Just my $0.02.

I've put it into my code, but updating the version on the website has become a major undertaking now that so many people are involved. So it will have to wait until the next actual revision.

Royce 12-07-2009 04:21 PM

When is that likely to be? I've patiently waited many, many months now and the version i just downloaded from the website still doesnt resolve this (basic) issue. Can you perhaps email me a download link?

FrankGuy 12-07-2009 08:08 PM

If Serene Screen is not in windowed mode the "Windows + D" key combo exits the program cleanly. That key combination to drop to the desk top has been around for a while too so maybe the remote can send that code to the computer as well as the "Alt+F4" code.

... and maybe not :D

Jim Sachs 12-08-2009 09:46 AM

Royce - I'm still not clear on the remote contol you are using, and what functions it can provide. Am I correct that it can transmit an Alt-F4, but not a right-mouse click?

Royce 12-09-2009 07:03 AM

Correct, it can transmit Alt+F4 and I believe backspace. Both of these work on the previous marine aquarium.

ps. The remote is a standard windows media center one.

Jim Sachs 12-09-2009 09:45 AM

I've never seen one, but I'll look it up.

Royce 01-23-2010 06:16 PM

Jim, any luck? All i really need the screensaver to do is exit on backspace. I dont think you need to worry too much about the remote i am using.

feldon34 01-24-2010 09:01 AM

Jim, could you set a registry key that users can modify which will be the key that will cause the Aquarium to exit? Then people can just put the ASCII or Windows Code they want.

Jim Sachs 01-24-2010 11:18 AM

Yes, that's probably a good way to handle it.

Jim Sachs 02-14-2010 02:20 AM

Does anyone besides Royce still require ALT_F4 as an exit key?

JohnWho 02-14-2010 08:35 AM

Not me.

jleslie 02-15-2010 09:07 AM

It is the Windows standard so I vote yes...

Before answering, I would like to know why you ask?

Is there some difficulty or down-side with including it? Does it interfere with some other feature or something?

Jim Sachs 02-15-2010 09:50 AM

No, just asking.

StumpyBloke 12-01-2010 11:45 AM

Sorry to resurect an old thread but I thought it better to do that than create a new repeat one...

... is there any news on this? I want to use it on my Windows 7 x64 Media Center setup but it ignores any presses of the Microsoft Media Center remote control. I have emailed Tech Support again but so far nothing back.

TIA, Rich

Jim Sachs 12-03-2010 11:07 AM

Instead of asking, why not just hit Alt-F4 and see? :)

StumpyBloke 12-03-2010 11:12 AM

Hi, because I cant do Alt-F4 from the Media Center remote (as per the post). However I have found that pressing Clear on it, cancels the screen saver.

Rich

jleslie 12-08-2010 06:36 PM

Result!

Jim Sachs 12-08-2010 08:09 PM

Wait - you guys asked for exit on Alt-F4 because ESC or Right Button weren't available on whatever weird remote you were using, so I added it to v3.1. What are you asking for now?

jleslie 12-09-2010 03:04 AM

I thought he was saying he had what he wanted in the first place?
