Which driver version to install on XP?
 

I have an Asus GeForce3 v8200 Ti5 card. I'm running driver version 23.12 for the videocard now - but the computer freezes shortly after the screensaver is activated.

Anyone had the same problem and solved it? Any advise welcome!

I've only seen the 23.12 version on Microsofts Windows update site, I had the same problem, if I were you, I would roll that driver back to the previous version, then go to the nvidia website and download and install the 23.11 driver. The only difference between the 23.12 and the 23.11 that I noticed is that Microsoft certified the 23.12, unfortunatley, its as stable as a Geo Tracker going around a sharp turn. The 23.11 isn't certified by Microsoft, but thats no big deal, they don't have time to certify every driver that comes in thier doors. Try the 23.11 driver and see if it works for you...

Afte having tried everything from 21.88 to 23.11 and up, I ended up with 27.51. I'ts been 24 hours now, and no real problems so far. I think it might behave from now on ;)

Thanks for posting this info. We have had a lot of email about v1.1 freezing G-Force 3 cards under WinXP, and people just refuse to believe it's the drivers, because they are Microsoft Certified.

This 23.12 is really starting to be a pain in the behind.

They probably are there somewhere, although I couldn't find them doing a quick search.

Be aware that they are betadrivers, so nobody will take any responsibility if they don't work on your system.

I find the 23.12 drivers work fine on my machine. I have WinXP, and an Asus GeForce3 ti200.

The only thing I see is that my power saver doesn’t work for shutting my monitor off, or going on system standby.

Version 27.70 is already out too......BETA reference of course, but so far pretty stable on my machine. And generally you won't find pre-release/BETA drivers on the nvidia site, just because of the fact that they are not supported. I imagine nvidia doesn't want floods of emails of support requests, which is why they don't post them. Don't ask me why they "leak" BETA/pre-release drivers, probably a marketing ploy or sort of a VERY informal test.

What makes me really curious to know, is how come the same driver version will perform so completely different on otherwise similar systems.

Same videocard, same OS same directX version - and still the the driver that crashes one system is rock solid on the next....

It's easy to think the MB or prosessor wouldn't directly have any influence on how a video driver is managing it's video card...?

Before DirectX, every sound and video card required separate code and modules to work. If I were writing a PC game in 1995 (in DOS of course), I would have to write code to support CGA, EGA, VGA, SVGA, Tandy graphics, Sound Blaster, Sound Blaster Pro, Sound Blaster 16, Gravis Ultrasound, Tandy 3 channel sound, etc.

DirectX is an effort to make developer's lives easy by having one reference platform to develop for. Instead of the developer having to buy one of each video and sound card (they really had to do this!), they can just write for one platform.

But of course DirectX failed in two places.

#1 Not strict enough about how cards are supposed to handle things. Recent 3dfx Voodoo drivers simply won't accept compressed textures the "officially published way" (which is how Jim is sending them). There's just a lot of issues where different cards do their own thing.

#2 Not open-source. Microsoft hates open source because they don't have complete control over the code and the money. But in the case of DirectX, it really won't be the best until they open it up and stop keeping the libraries a secret.

I've done a major update to my website and I've even linked to *shudder* beta drivers for GeForce 3 to deal with the stopples and stutters.

Chipset, BIOS, and CPU instruction set have a serious impact on how the video card is handled.

It should be stamped on the Windows 2000 and XP box:

You MUST download the latest BIOS for your motherboard and flash upgrade it. Windows 2000 and XP will have poor results if your BIOS is out-of-date.
