Being the last thing that gets drawn, the bubble column would be the first place that out-of-memory anomolies would show up. You could try using a lower resolution.
As far as using a lot of memory for a screensaver, remember that this is not a screensaver -- it's a pedal-to-the-metal Direct3D application that can be used as a screensaver. I made every effort to conserve memory. The meshes and textures are highly compressed, and remain that way in memory, unless you press ctrl-t to uncompress them.
