HD-DVD players will be here December 2005. There is only 1 format, Sony's Blu-Ray format. I usually scratch my head when Sony comes out with their own format, but they managed to get all but 2 major manufacturers on board with Blu-Ray, so it's a done deal.

It helps that every major DVD produced in the last 5 years has also triggered the production of an HDTV master, ready to use when HD-DVD hits. Most major studios planned ahead. I wouldn't mind paying another $15-25 each for the handful of movies that would benefit most from HD transfers. Of course I don't need to buy Groundhog Day again, but Terminator 2 would be fantastic to own in HD.

The difference from DVD to HDTV can be stunning, especially with videotaped productions like sports and documentaries.
