It's a marketing strategy by Encore to squeeze a little more life out of a 6-year-old product. I was talking to an Encore VP at Reichart's party last week, and he said that MA's life has not just been long, but unprecedented.
Regarding the rebate, few people ever send it in. For a while, we had a rebate program going where the product would have actually been free, but still made a good profit on it because of this phenomenon.
