Personally I'm not sure what the benefit would be, but maybe it could be done.
Overall what Jim does is like a magician. They entice you into watching one hand while the other one does what they want it too to fulfill and create the illusion.
That's what Jim does as well. The positioning and look of the tank is all illusion. Move one object, even slightly and it's ruined.
Overall I'm not sure what deepening the tank would accomplish. Basically there might be something there just because of the fact that farther away means smaller and less detail, which equals "easier" as far as slight of hand so to speak. The question's are -
1) Is there anything Jim wants to accomplish that would be made easier by doing it back there?
2) Is anything going to get broken by doing it?
