Problem after downloading M$ Security patches
After downloading the lastest M$ security patches and updates for XP, my MA2 looks like this. Any ideas?
Thanks. |

The textures are not being loaded. From the low frame rate, it looks like you have a fairly weak video card. Do you know how much video memory it has?

Did those updates include DX9 by any chance? I'd just update your video drivers... 20 FPS at 1280x1024? I bet you have a TNT2, it's old drivers don't play well with DX9...

Yes, the GOOD, WORKING video driver for your video card was replaced with something else by Microsoft. All too common tale.
You need to roll back your XP to the old driver. Or you may be able to resolve the problem by holding down the Ctrl key and pressing T in the Aquarium. (You must turn off Exit on Mouse Move first in Settings) P.S. DirectX is not offered as an upgrade by Windows Update.

I received the DirectX upgrade via Windows update as illustrated in the attached.
I would advise an uniinstall of this update if it is present in your installation history which can be viewed via the Windows Update web site. |

I've tried to download that about ten times, but it always fails to install. I'm glad now that it's never gotten into my system. Thanks for the heads up.

No problem
I've been running with this update without issue thus far although I did have a strange issue when I downloaded the castle from the *other screensavers* area of this forum. Rendering was totally fubarred and I just pulled the demo screensaver off my system rather than troubleshoot it. Time to go re-install it and see if I can't isolate something specific to the new Directx version that might be causing the problem. By the way I am a MA customer and a GA customer and wish to offer my compliments to all involved with both products as they are top notch screensavers. My special thanks to Jim for pioneering the concept and delivering an application that draws an "oooh" or "ahhhh" from folks seeing these apps running on my systems. I'm running a Dell 8100 P4 @1.7gz with a PNY Ti4400 and both aquariums run flawlessly. |

I think DX9 is still in Windows Update just not under the Critical section.

Didn't know DirectX was a part of Windows Update. Anyway, DirectX cannot be removed or upgraded in any official way.
There are DirectX remover programs. I think the main culprit in Jupp's situation is the video card driver "update".

I once used system restore to remove DirectX 9.
Although the longer you wait the more drastic that is.

Yes, this is a weak RAGE FURY PRO, but MA2 used to work before. Anyway, I re-installed the drivers and ... voilà. But it doesn't look good on my new 18.1 TFT.
Thanks guys. |

If you spent all those money an 18-incher cost, I would really recommend upgrading your vid card as well. I don't know where in the world you live (as you havent put that in your profile) but a GeForce 4MX card could be had for just ~$3-400. Not much compared to the monitor.
If you want, we'll be happy to discuss a suitable card for you. /Tiny Rage Thanks to Morgan, Tiny Snapshots is up and running again with "Tiny Järvafält" as the latest addition – Go have a look and tell me what you think.

I wasn't aware DirectX was so embedded that a un-install of the patch wouldn't roll it back but in my case I can retreat if required as I created a new Ghost image prior to applying the updates including the DirectX one illustrated in my earlier post. Microsoft's recommended course of procedure to change which version of DirectX you have is to REFORMAT.
Jupp, time to dump that $5 (current prices) card with 1996 technology. Aopen GeForce 4 MX440 64MB $46.99 GeForce 2 MX400 32MB $34.50
