Norton File Insight Problem

Strange occurrence. When I downloaded version 3.1 from http://www.fish-byte.com/MarineAquarium3.scr Norton's File Insight said the file was not trustworthy and deleted the file. I then downloaded Beta 11p http://www.fish-byte.com/MA3Beta.zip and it unzipped and ran with no problem. There appears to be something in 3.1 that is causing Norton to gag.

Have not had any problems with any of the betas.

Love the program, great work Jim.

Any ideas?

Alan

I have had the same problem. Should be ok when put in installer mode. We will see.

I suspect that Norton's stuff may call any .scr file untrustworthy. They are "executable" files that could cause problems.

I can't help but wonder if this isn't an idiosyncracy of the current Norton system. After all, if the .scr is merely an unzipped version of the .zip (which it clearly is) and the zip has been performed by an industry recognised package (which it has, namely Winzip), then it is baffling that Norton, which happily scans inside such zipped files/folders, would allow the zip through but not the uncompressed scr.

edit: beaten to it in a much more concise conclusion by Dale.

antivirus issues

Not sure if related but after trying 3.1 on my laptop Kerpesky Pure said I had a key logger/intrusion issue. This happened right after running 3.1 Again not sure if this might be the same problem. But thought worth mentioning

That is interesting, James.

Perhaps, since MA does intercept certain keys (the "hotkeys"), it is being identified this way?

Did it do it the same thing with 3.0 beta?

OK, that's two AV packages that don't like MA3.

I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials, and it hasn't complained about MA3.

Just a data point - but I would hate to see 3.1 hit the street (installer version) with this potential firestorm.

How does Prolific test their products for AV sensitivity?

Norton

I think I found a fix. Before dowloading I turned off the firewall and the Anti-virus auto-protect. Downloaded and installed then turned them both back and no problems since. I have never had a problem with the installer version.

Exclamation Re antivirus issue

@JohnWho

I had no problems with 3.0. It may have just been a fluke but it was a little strange I got that warning from my security suite right after running 3.1. FYI not got the popup since taking 3.1 of my system. HOPE MY SYSTEM ISN'T HACKED

I think the lesson I take from this is that even if more than one av product report a problem, it's very likely to be a quirk of the av product's config and not a problem with MA.

Not to worry - we know that Marine Aquarium is a safe program.

Many Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware/Malware/etc.-ware packages get "false positives" now and then. They are usually corrected quickly.

Your suite may be detecting it as "suspicious" activity rather than "malicious" activity which may be understandable when analyzing a "scr" file that may be intercepting keystrokes. I suggest you put MA 3.1 back on your system and then if you get that error, look at it closely. Is it giving you a chance to "accept" MA 3.1 behaviour as "OK"? If so, once you do that you won't see the pop up again.

MA 3.1 is safe and you'll enjoy the new features.

Without knowing and understanding exactly what might be different in this regard between 3.0 and 3.1, it does seem a bit odd that you only got the message with 3.1.

I think this is a mischaracterisation.

If Marine Aquarium 3.1 were inside a Zip file, I doubt these antivirus programs would be raising a red flag.
