Probably not - I suspect the laptop's keyboard logic intercepts the FN keystroke before it hits Windows. Actually, what's really needed is to tell the Trident driver to emit its commands to the internal display by default instead of the external display. That should be accessable from Windows. Well, the operative word there is "should".

Come to think about it, there is an advantage to the system coming up blank: "Gee, honey, this old laptop is shot. It keeps coming up blank and making funny bubbly noises. Guess it's time for a new laptop, huh."

I think not. A friend working on his PhD thesis lost his screen in mid-writing and had to limp by with an external CRT until the project was done (and, yes, he's now Dr. Larry and not just Larry).

In all fairness to Dell, they said "send it back and we'll fix it for free" but obviously that wasn't an option for Larry. Anyway, I've had enough of laptop screens going blank to last me for a while.

At RB's suggestion, I moved the "removing DirectX 9" question here:

I thought about that but I'm not sure the script will run when I want it to (very early in the boot-up process). It's easier to just tag FN-F5 when the screen goes blank during boot-up.
