Will be like christmas for every updated fish we get. I read that 50% of the background is done. What does that mean? Are 50% of the objects done only or are the programming done for those objects so you have a half finished moving tank?

If I remember correctly Jim told me that he has 50% of the background objects done, maybe slightly more now. But in addition I think he has the camera panning working as well.

So there's a chance it might be done by October, then?

Jav has it right - about 50% of the objects are in the tank, many just hanging in space with no connective material. The camera is panning back and forth through the whole width. The resolution is far better than before, and people running it on a 1920x1280 monitor (or HDTV Plasma) shouldn't be disappointed.
Mark - there's at least a 1-in-12 chance that it will be done by some October.

Of course this would be better news if my 1920x1200 monitor didn't walk out the window at 12:35 am on Monday... (This is at work.) Apparently it was a trade for some muddy footprints, I think I lost out there...

Considering that hint of reluctance I sense from "Yeah, I guess I'll have to find a place for it.", I'm pretty sure the Quartz will be optional.

I hope you've got backups on memory sticks all over the house.

The 2 TB model is now available for about $1,000 online. It can be operated RAID5 meaning you have 1.5TB of usable storage and the other .5TB is used for striping and mirroring. If one of the 4 hard drives fails, the other 3 are used to reconstruct all the data. You can immediately start using the drive, but data from that "dead" hard drive will be slower to access as it is reconstructing. And it's 1000Mbs (gigabit) Ethernet, so you can put it in a separate room from your computers. I intend to get one soon, so all of my data is stored externally from my computer, so if my computer crashes, it has minimal impact.
