That's strange, I'm using XP Professional and it installs correctly.

Mine gave an error toward the end of the installation process, and had messed up the DirectX files to a point where DX programs wouldn't run. A reboot seems to have re-instated the old drivers.

The "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" shows that all the directx files were updated with the newer versions.

I always run chkdsk/f every few months and chkdsk/r one or twice every year. Maybe if you ran chkdsk/r it would fix one of those unknown/odd problems and DirectX would then install correctly, it couldn't hurt! (I hope

).

You could also consider "System File Checker" (scannow sfc).

Jim/harris,

I ran chkdsk/r and apart from taking forever to complete, the end result is the same...
The DXSETUP.exe created by directx_Jun2010_redist.exe still returns the error... DXSETUP.exe is not a valid Win32 application.
(Which amongst other things can translate as, - File is not designed for your version of Windows.)

So this could be another Windows7 created problem. - My Win2kPro system is perfectly happy with directx_aug2009_redist.exe

Cliff,

The mystery is solved. I did list in my original post it was for XP through Win7; from Microsoft's download page:

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7; Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2008; Windows Vista; Windows XP Service Pack 3

If I remember correctly, Windows 2000 reached its "end of life cycle" sometime late last year. It wont be long before Microsoft will do the same thing to us XP users. Only then will I reluctantly upgrade to Win7.

Now the question is, what operating system is Jim using?

harris - I'm on XP. This computer is a new cobbled-together setup after the death of my main development system, and has not been the most stable. For example, when I turn it on each morning I have to go hunting through the sound drivers and try to figure out how to un-mute the sound card.
