Beautiful but kills power saving
I got my version through the Microsoft Plus pack and apparently anything OpenGL will keep XP from going into powerv saving mode (like Standby). My normal modus operendi is to go into screen saver then into standby if I am away from my computer for an extended period. This is the most beautiful screen saver I jave seen. Too bad I can't use it all he time

Hate to say it, but the registered/purchased version of the Aquarium does have full support for EnergyStar power saving.
I'll go ahead and apologize in advance that you had to pay Microsoft $40 for Plus, since it is only the fish demo and a few other things. That was purely Microsoft's decision and SereneScreen doesn't get a cut of it.

The Aquarium is Direct3D, not OpenGL. In the full version of the Aquarium, the Settings screen has a checkbox to enable or disable monitor-sleep.
Last week, Microsoft told us about a bug in their DX8 example code which disabled sleep mode on some computers, especially laptops. The next version we deliver to them will encorporate their fix. I don't know how (or if) they plan to make this bug fix available to current users of their 3-fish demo.

No Monitor sleep setting
Jim, I just bouight the retail version. YThe version I have is 0.99 (1.6mb unzipped)and has no monitor/sleep setting to allow power saving Is there a later version that for some reason is not downloaded automatically? Also I put it in the C:\windows\system32 directory where all the other screen savers are.

This only happens on certain machines. The fix is included in v1.1, which will be a free download for you.

Jim, do you remember the idea of shoing a message 'press space for menu' which apears the first time the aquarium is used until 'space' is pressed. Did you consider implementing it? Will you?
It seems like many people dont stumble upon the menu fast enough. This would make it easier for everyone. |

Standby not working
I have version 1.1 on a dell 8200 (pentium 4, GForce3) running Windows XP Pro. System Standby still does not work for me when aquarium is running as screensaver.

Well, I was hoping that we had this fixed, but I guess there are still some drivers out there that won't let it go into sleep mode. Works just fine on every machine here and all those at Prolific. Set the Aquarium for 5 minutes, and monitor sleep for 10 minutes, and that's exactly what happens here.

Jim - I believe you are confusing MONITOR SLEEP with SYSTEM STANDBY. I can get my monitor to sleep, but I would like the whole system to go into low power standby. Works with other screensavers.

I have tried monitor sleep, system standby, and a combination of both. My system will never go into sleep mode when the aquarium is running. It's has always been like that for ever since I ran the aquarium. It's not any real big deal for me because if I wanted the monitor off, I would just hit the switch

I can’t get my monitor to sleep, or my system to go on standby when the screensaver is running. It’s no big deal to me because I rarely use it, but I just thought I’d let you know.
My system: WinXP Home Upgrade (but fresh installed) Pentium 3, 1GHz Samtron 76v 17inch monitor Asus v8200 Deluxe GeForce3 Ti200 (23.11 nVidia DetonatorXP drivers) DirectX 8.1 Screensaver v1.1 w/”Disable monitor sleep mode” unchecked. |
