[feldon26] Reichart: the control panel in the new codebase version of the Aquarium you are designing. (Folks, the Saltwater Aquarium is moving to a new codebase. I'll talk about it some on the forum in the next few days.)
So tell us about this new codebase.

[Yodelking] How much would the 3d-background require? To me it seems like a 2 years project to get it nice.

[JimSachs] Yodelking - maybe 3 months.
Is this Jim's first attempt at a release date?

[diverslung] Jim, I don't know if this was questioned before, but will there be a beta-version of the freshwater-tank we may test
[JimSachs] diverslung - Yes.

I'd like to be on this list. Please!

[feldon26] I never thought I'd get excited about a goldfish aquarium until I saw a little bit of what Prolific is working on,
When can we here on the forum get a look at this?

I'd like to be on the beta test list for this also.

pat,

The new codebase will allow for several things to be improved, all geared towards more realism, and it will help Jim in his programming efforts.

As far as the realease date, the freshwater is still the main goal at this point, I would say that is the timeframe that Jim is shooting for once he gets to that point. But with new tools and a new codebase, have to wait and see on that one.

I haven't heard of anything being at the beta testing phase yet, but like before, we will let everyone know when things are getting to that point. But, we would ask that everyone not flood the forum or Prolific and so on requesting to be on a list.

And last but not least, Jim and Prolific aren't ready to release any partial previews yet. As soon as something is available, with their permission, you will see it here first.

As soon as there is something to test, you'll know.

The new codebase/engine has much smarter handling of fish swimming past each other. There are no longer 2 "planes" or layers that the fish swim in anymore. It allows Jim to add and remove vertices to a fish to give it more or less detail without doing a week of programming to get it to fit with his current swimming model. It has physics and fluid dynamics modeling (wait til you see how fins can move!).

As you saw mentioned in the chat, Jim can tweak a fish, hit Save, and instantly see the change applied to the fish swimming in an emulation of the Aquarium in another window. This dramatically reduces development time.

The goal is not to catch up with AquaReal and SimAquarium, but to set a new standard.

From the chat transcript:
[Reichart] Do you know that everyone in Norway has a cell phone, most men have 2!
[feldon26] Reichart: yeah I knew that.
Teac, did you know this?

I can't imagine what you would need 2 for. I can only talk on 1 at a time.

Two incoming lines? One private & one at work?

Seriously though, Sweden used to be the most cell-phone-dense (how's that for a word, 67?) country in the world, but then Finland went past us (just as Nokia flew past Ericsson ). Something about their regular phone rates being much higher than ours. I assume the guys on the west coast (a.k.a. Norway) could have a similar density, but the "most men have two" part has (IMHO) to count for everybody's previous phone aswell as the current one. This way of counting would put Japan sky-high above Scandinavia though, as everybody over there switches to the latest and greatest every three months. Then again, that could be a popular misconception we over here have about the Japanese, kinda like what som Americans have about Norwegians...

How com I never stay on topic and always have to rant about something related to Sweden?
