Cool ** Boxed Version **

<b>Online purchasers of the Aquarium DO NOT receive a boxed version of the Aquarium. They are two separate things. That's why there is a poll above. THERE IS NO COFFEE MUG RIGHT NOW, I'm just gauging interest in the possibility of one. Poll above ASSUMES YOU ALREADY OWN THE DOWNLOADED VERSION OF THE AQUARIUM.</b>

In the coming weeks, a boxed version of the Aquarium will be appearing in various retail stores. I am excited to release most of the box artwork for this version.

I have made modifications to each of the pieces so they cannot easily be stolen and pirated (the resolution is really too low anyway). Also, Jim hasn't had a chance to give me the lastest front, so I have extrapolated on it based on the graphic at http://www.serenescreen.com/info/mswelcomeBACKUP.asp

There seems to be a little confusion about upgrades. They have always been free, and will continue to be free, no matter whether someone buys the downloadable version or the boxed version.

In fact, upgrades are the heart of the Aquarium. It will probably never be "finished", but will continue to evolve for years. Anyone who buys a Key Code or the boxed version from us is welcome to come along for the adventure.

The CD is just a snapshot of what the program looked like at that moment, but it's real value is to act as a Key Code. Just pop the CD in the drive, download the latest version, and it will recognize a legitimate user. (There IS some copy protection on the CD.)

The basic price of the boxed version will be about the same as the downloadable version, but shipping, handling, and taxes would be added. I am hoping that Prolific will be able to give current users a price break on the boxed version, but it's entirely up to them. Whenever a product goes into mass-merchandising chains, there are inevitably returns. It is most likely that any highly-discounted copies would come from this stock of returns, so they wouldn't be available immediately after we start shipping.

Unless something has changed, $20 gives you a 3D background, more regular fish, and bug fixes. It does not give you invertebrates and specialty fish. My $20 vote option above would give you the boxed version AND any specialty creatures/invertebrates that are released in the following year. It really is a nice value added box. Obviously, the box would come with 1.0. This is basically a golden ticket for 1 year of ALL upgrades and add-ons.

I've clarified the poll answer to be more specific.

When people think of upgrades, they just ASSUME bug fixes and little add-ons. Adobe Photoshop, for example, doesn't come with free upgrades, but the bugfixes are just expected (and come frequently).

I was just doing some advance research that Prolific might want to look at. Like what value could Prolific add to the box (instead of just offering a price break) to make its purchase by current owners of the download-only version more attractive and more mutually beneficial.

I will confess my vote. I'd pay $35 to have an autographed version and coffee mug. And I mean a real signature, not photocopied. Obviously Jim would have to be agreeable to this. Perhaps a limited edition of 300 or 500 signed copies would be available to people who already purchased 99L or 1.0.

Again, just ideas.

DirectX 6 or 7?

On the back of the CD, just to the left of the barcode: This program requiresDirectX 7 or newer, and a Direct3D-compatible videocard. – I always thought that it was DirectX 6 that was the requirement. Not trying to write on anyone's nose here, just a little curious...

The reason I reiterate this point time and time again is we get people in the chatroom on an almost daily basis asking where the Octopus is or how to unlock it.

If there is that much misunderstanding of clearly stated (At least on my websites!) facts already, imagine the screaming later on after seeing "free upgrades" stamped everywhere. I can already imagine people making nasty accusations towards Jim.

I am still shocked when people come in asking where the Octopus and Coral Shrimp are, or where the 3D background is, as if there is this massive conspiracy by Jim, Prolific, and myself, to keep a finished version of the Aquarium hidden somewhere in our sock drawer.

Or worse, people claim that 1.0 was supposed to contain the Octopus, Shrimp, and 3D background (yes, we've seen this on the chat).

Folks, as soon as we know something, we'll announce it here and it will appear on SereneScreen. We wouldn't keep things as awesome as that under wraps.

I can already see the hundreds of complains when 1.0 is released that it's either "not enough" or doesn't contain the Octopus and 3D background "as was promised." I know people can imagine and distort anything but we can be more precise.

When I really like something, as I really like this product, I like to have something personal from the creator. (No, nothing like his socks or a lock of his hair... not that crazy yet.) I mean an autograph. It is special to me. I would really love to get the box (just because it is pretty) but the real prize for me would be The CD with the JewelCase Cover art. I would love Jim to slip the cover out and sign it, so that when it is slipped back in, the art and signature can be seen (and protected by) through the jewel case cover.

I would pay for that. Jim, if you want to contact me maybe we can work something out ^_^

By the way, I saw a copy of XP Plus at Costco today while buying a mountain of tissue paper (tis the season) and it made me smile ^_^

Know what else I would like? A glossy poster of that picture Jim did of the computer on a pedestal in the middle of a tropical paradise. The one with the water spilling out of it? I printed it out at work and stuck it up on my cube wall. The dpi on my printer didn't do it justice. (PS if that was signed too I would be a happy happy girl!)

Jim Sachs Is Cool! <------ (My new t-shirt slogan)

Oooo. A t-shirt. THAT would be spiffy keen! A nice black tee with the fish’s all over it! I would totally buy that too! And a fishy keychain... and a fishy night light... and a fishy pillow!

The possibilities are endless =) I would buy a black bed spread with a coral landscape and get seven fish pillows (and one sea star) and put them on the bed.

Am I nuts or what? <---- (Can we get a poll on that?)

BOXED version

I think you should put a questionare in each box asking people what they would like to see in their aquarium. You could ask people if thay would pay extra for a "special" fish or other object in the tank. I would probably get a t-shirt if there was one to order.

Special fish and creatures ARE coming. Gauging reaction won't make them come out any faster.

I understand the idea, but usually questionnaires are done to research whether such a course of action SHOULD occur, like how important extras and anamorphic widescreen are on a DVD (both have proven to be extremely popular, resulting in discs that more frequently contain both).

I think your poll is missing at least one critical choice: "$0. I prefer just downloading it, and am happy with that. I don't need no stinkin' mug."

Well, coffee mugs and mousepads ARE coming. Jim has already said this. Just thought I'd get a jump on things. I want a yellow tang antenna ball, and a polo shirt, and hmm what else.

I've got a list of about $100 worth of TiVo junk I want too. Especially that coffee mug.

I have to admit that I would need to be included in the group that would like to have some extra goodies also.

Hehe, don't get me wrong, I'm all for affluence (whatever that is...I have no first-hand experience...)

I think I'm a special case, though, having been innoculated against "mug-and-t-shirt-envy" from years of working in the computer profession and amassing a ludicrous amount of mugs, t-shirts, pens, pins, hats, magnets, bumper stickers, bubble wands (!) and other baubles from every corporate software and hardware marketing gook I've ever shaken hands with.

I have to admit that some of it is cool, though. I don't use Macs, but Apple sure handed out some nice freebies back in the early days. And I still have all of the old Apple tie-tacks, including the Apple II, Lisa, the original Mac, and Apple III ones. Maybe they're worth something now...

Hey, maybe when Jim makes that movie he's planning on making, all of these free mugs and t-shirts will appreciate in (monetary) value too!
