1280x1024 Frame Rates
Hi All,
I am running a PIII 733 with 512Mb Ram and a Matrox G400 Dual Head Card. I am getting about 37fps running at 1280 x 1024 x 16. Does this sound ok, it seems to run beautifully but from what I read there is a noticable difference between 37fps and 80fps. Would you attribute the slower frame rates to the Matrox card not being a great 3D card? Cam |

I am running at 1280 x 1024 with no problems and get frame rates between 73 & 78 on a 19 inch screen. But I also have a new loaded Dell 8200.

Cammo,
The G400 is not available in laptops. Check https://www.feldoncentral.com/Sachs/help.html to see if you have the latest drivers for your G400 card.

Cammo, Not sure if you are dissing me or not, but my "loaded" Dell 8200 has a 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 video card. This is with a 1.9 GHz Pentium 4 and 512 MB ram on Win XP Pro. I would guess your slow rate is due to your vid card, unless you have lots of processes running in the background. What Op system are you running and what is running in the background (programs, net activity. etc.)?
And Hellbound, lots of people run at the high res with a big screen to see more desktop real estate (well, programs and data and such). Perfectly do-able, even for my 40 year old eyes. |

Yes. I am in that group also. Morgan fusses at me all the time because I run at 1600x1200 on a 19" monitor. I have actually looked at some Dell notebooks also. They have one with a 15" screen that will run at 1600x1200. Thats the one for me.

Algae,
Yes, I was "dissing" you a bit but I do appreciate your response this time with some advice. I guess it is my video card, it kicks ass for the 2D stuff I do (90% Photoshop) but as far as 3D goes it lags behind. I am also running XP Pro with 512Mb ram so I am guessing it could only be the card. 37-38 fps looks pretty good but I can see it would be better at about 60-80 fps. Oh well, I ain't going to change cards to suit my screensaver but I am building a games machine with a GeForce 3 card so hopefully that will really power it along!! Cameron |

1280 x 1024
I keep my screen saver at max rez. 1280x1024 for my 17" Sony. and I get about 88 FPS with vsync off on my Voodoo 5500.
Things in the aquarium are not too small as some would think. Everything is the same size as if it was on a 800x600 rez screen. But at the higher resolution, everything is much more crisp and clean. Allows for much more detail to be seen. Its not like having the desktop rez set that high , and having microscopic icons to work with (Which brings up another subject. Why isn't there a desktop mode for windows that uses the 3D card to draw with? 3D windows?) Last edited by Shinsa; 01-06-2002 at 04:20 AM. |

Shinsa, I wish they had some 3D effects in Windows. As long as people can turn it off.
FishyBusiness installed XP and then proceeded to turn off all the fading effects. With my 1.2 GHz Athlon, I don't mind splurging a few MHz on fancy effects. Re: 800x600. The fish can scale to any size but look best at 800x600 or 1024x768. The background is natively 1024x768.

Shinsa -
If you are talking about a full-screen 3D window BEHIND the desktop, I haven't seen any examples of this. But from your wording, it sounds like you are talking about a 3D window on the desktop. Of course the Aquarium fully supports this. Just press "f".

Shinsa was talking about Microsoft Windows actually having some 3D effects.

I hope this feature is added to the wish list. Isn't great if the aquarium stayed as window's background and not just as a another window?Combining with those background transparency softwares, we could see full screen size aquarium while we work ( please don't ask me bout how much pc power needed ... ) |

Cammo, Read on!
Hey Cammo, I have practically the same setup as you (Cel 850, G400) and I run the Aquarium at 1600x1200 getting 48FPS. In 1280x1024 I get around 60FPS. If you don't enable Vsync Off in Powerdesk, the frame rate drops dramatically (by 1/3 in my case down to about 36FPS).
Your issues may be related to memory and video card clock rate settings. Matrox Powerdesk has a lot of features you can access for tweaking, but you can also get the Matrox Tweak Utility, a must IMHO. With a lot of tweaking you may be able to substancially increase your refresh rate. I disagree as far as the Matrox being not a 'good' card for 3D. It may not be top of the line and maybe less than ideal for OpenGL but it works very well and beautifully with most games, especially in Direct3D. Hope this helps. |

Hey, Thanks for your reply..
I am running XP and recently downloaded the latest G400 update (Version 5.82.014) to enable OpenGL support for running my favourite game Return to Wolfenstein. This hasn't sped up my frame rates at all in Serene Screen but I am very interested in what you say about VSync. I don't seem to have any VSync properties in Powerdesk properties so I assume that it is to do with my version.. ???? Cameron |

G400 Tweaking
Sorry about that - Indeed, you may not have that option available. Forgot I have been running the Matrox Technical Support Tweak Utility (which includes an overclocker!) forever. There is also a Property Tab Enhancement available, but the matrox utility is better IMHO. it is available at www.matrox.com/mga or www.matroxusers.com.
Also, when you upgrade your drivers, remove the old ones completely using their uninstall utility. When you reboot, select the Standard VGA driver (it'll go in 640x480) then and only then setup the new driver version. That will prevent possible conflicts between versions. I am also running the latest drivers (6.82.013 beta) just like you, except that I am running Win98SE. Hope this helps. Last edited by 83bj60; 01-07-2002 at 10:57 PM. |

OH MY GOD,NO Cammo you have a serious problem there!!!!!!!!!!! Im running an AMD 900Mhz Thunderbird Athlon with 256Mb Ram & Leadtek Winfast Geforce2 Titanium 19"cheap monitor.. I am getting about 249-256fps running at 1280 x 1024 x 16 if I hit the "f" button for windowed mode I get (1056.32 fps (320x240x32) yes it says one Thousand and fifty six. And its in 32bit? ( I have the ScreenShot if you want it ) However I am also the best in my class at "3dMark2001 www.madonion.com" meaning I probably have one of the fastest computers in the "gaming world" with the same system im using, just every day kind of guys.. Right now as I type this I have the following tasks running (1)Getright downloading Vidx4.12 (2)Dial up networking (3)Internet Explorer6 (4)Notepad (5)Adobe5.5 so i can Paste the screenshot ALT+Printscreen (6) Winamp.. And I am still getting 909Fps +or-6fps It usually sits at 1056FPS.. But however again! if I hold the mouse down on any open window and move it about like crazy it drops the FPS by about 200-400 FPS. So thats like something running in the background..! Anyway I think "Cammo" has got some settings in the bios he could change AGP 4X Mode,AGP driving value,PCI dynamic bursting,pci#2 acsess #1 retry,AGP master 1 ws write,AGP master ws read,Fast R-W turn around, and the rest find the info at www.tomshardware.com also tweaking the graffics card will help, V-sync off most definitely. as for Dissing algaeWiz you should he is giving you the wrong impression!!! 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 video card. This is with a 1.9 GHz Pentium 4 and 512 MB ram on Win XP Pro... F***OFF THIS IS S**T. I got better than that with an Geforce 2MX & 750Mhz Athlon 128Mb Ram Last word if you cant get it better after trying all buy a GEFORCE 2 MX there only about £50 now......... |

Tiny, and anyone else,
feel free to hit the small "Edit" button below your message if you want to change something in it, such as a typo. I often edit my posts 2-3 times before I'm happy with them, much to the chagrin of early readers.
