Animated Desktop

I saw this tip at the MacinTouch website. It allows you to have Marine Aquarium running as you desktop. It requires Mac OSX 10.2 and Quartz Extreme. I don't have 10.2 so I can't try it.

The following was posted by Brian Parry at MacinTouch

Open Terminal, Paste this command:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background &

(the ampersand returns the PID in case you want to kill it)

to remove:
get process # with Top
kill PID

Always kill the current instance before adding another, or you'll end up with multiples. Clears on its own when you restart.

I had posted a while ago looking to be able to do this. Now that 10.2 is out it works (and just too slick)

Two programs that can do this (and then add to login items)
Desktop Effects

BackgroundSaver

Angry Update

Well I updated to 10.2 on my iBook 366MHz.

I am running Marine Aquarium on my desktop, though it top framerate is 15fps.

When I have other things going on is slows down to 5-10 fps.

But this is so cool!

My G3 400 Powerbook (USB/SCSI) gets 15 - 16 fps in OS 9 and 1.5 fps in OS X because there aren't any hardware accelerated drivers on X for it. Count your blessings. :^)

Jim,

Do you mean you're getting those framerates, with the application?

I was giving the framerates with Marine Aquarium running in the desktop, when you can have windows, icons, folders on top of it.

One thing I have noticed is that Marine Aquarium runs slower in 10.2 than 10.1.5. With the same settings I used to get 30fps now its around 20fps.
I am disappointed at that :-(

Settings were 30fps, Shimmer Maximum.
