So, keeping in mind that this is an informal poll, what do you think of the new fish?

I was originally going to put "approved by Jim Sachs" on each poll item, but that would have made the poll huge.

All of the fish are rendered beautifully, so no complaints there, but I will probably never understand the fascination with the Squarespot Anthias...

As more fish are designed and released, I would appreciate the ability to mark certain fish as "never show this one." There a few in the available set that I would prefer never to see in my aquarium.

Assuming that the quality stays high, I think that anyone that can create fish/creatures of that quality level should be encouraged to do so. If there are artists in addition to Jim that can meet the standards set previously, bring on the fish!

Squarespot

Actually, this is my fav. I don't know why. But this is it.
My second is the Clown, then the rest. But, this is ALL about art, opinion, and serenity. Which is what makes this a fun product.

We do plan to improve the UI to allow much better control over the fish. Like “Never show this again” or “Show this just once in a blue moon.”

My favorites remain the clown (I dunno why, but it would be cool to see them schooling...), the copperband (because of the shimmering effect that no other fish seems to have), and the lionfish, with the working eyes and mouth.

I'm awaiting the 3-D tank, which I'm betting will include either a nudibranch, a seahorse, or a shrimp.

Jim/Reichart,

I was wondering, how do you guys decide who does the art and models for each new fish from this point forward? Thus far Jim has been making fish from Morgan's Wish List while Ken has created fish that Prolific wants. Do you have any future plans for a unified Prolific/Jim Wish List? Or will Jim continue on with fish from Morgan's list while Ken and other Prolific artists do fish that Prolific wants?

If you decide to keep the lists divided as they are now, will you ever allow users to submit their fish requests to Prolific as we do here on Morgan's site? Or will you refer to Morgan's list for Prolific made fish? Or perhaps Prolific wants to reserve the right to make fish decisions themselves (internally)?

Just curious...

This is not an accurate statement.

Jim has always done the fish he wants. Prolific did the fish they wanted. To my knowledge, the wishlist has not driven Jim's decision-making process in the past. I created the Wishlist (2 pages of it) before Jim had any idea there even WAS a fan site being created.

I *have* e-mailed and chatted with Jim in the past about which fish are "likely" or "unlikely", which is where the green checkmarks and red X's came from.

Jim's red X's have been determined for several reasons:
  • Aesthetics - Jim doesn't like it
  • Realism - either it cannot be reproduced in the Aquarium satisfactorily, or even if it DOES look realistic, to the untrained eye, it would look like a 'cartoon' fish. This is why Jim has not filled the tank with wrasses.
  • Intricate patterns too detailed to look satisfactory on 800x600 or 640x480 displays.
  • Politics

Do you have any future plans for a unified Prolific/Jim Wish List?
The wishlist, as it stands, is not tailored to anyone but the fans. It is an albeit out-of-date listing of the most-requested fish plus a few biased in my favor. Not too many people raise a stink about wanting a GENUINE juvenile Emperor Angel [Ken's is an IMPERATOR].

Or will Jim continue on with fish from Morgan's list while Ken and other Prolific artists do fish that Prolific wants?
I don't know who is more likely to do a "popular" fish, Jim or Prolific. I do know that Prolific must've had a reason for steering clear of the Wishlist. And it's funny to say that because they put 2 fish that appear on the wishlist anyway!

I think part of their goal was to put fish that are quite different from Jim's. It is almost a test to see people's reactions. If all the fish were similar-looking or similar in shape to Jim's, then they might be dismissed as half-efforts, but since an effort is being made to do something new, they will hopefully be judged on their own merits.

I think any artist stepping up to the plate of Jim's Aquarium would be wise to also "test the waters" with a few break-the-mould fish.

If you decide to keep the lists divided as they are now, will you ever allow users to submit their fish requests to Prolific as we do here on Morgan's site?
Prolific has looked at our wishlist quite extensively and, to my knowledge, does not have any official wishlist of their own. And I don't think they have permanently included or excluded any fish/creature just yet.

Or perhaps Prolific wants to reserve the right to make fish decisions themselves?
We reserve the right to serve refuse to anyone.

Wish list

1. Q: This is the part where DL buries his head in the sand.

A: Hey, no making me feel sorry for you.

OK, here is our basic logic, pretty close for both Sachs and us (Prolfic).

Right now, our basic fish logic is:
Find fish that can be built within the constraints of the current template (meaning, all the fish are currently using the same basic body type, and logic).

Of those that work; which look cool?

Of those that look cool, which one does the artist want to make?
This is art after all.

Once Goldfish Aquarium comes out, we will start to rework the first item of logic, and hopefully open ourselves up to a larger array of possible fish. The reason being that our goldfish are already doing some “new” tricks. Subtle, but new.

There really is no consider for the wish list, other then we check it out to see if it meets the logic. I think I teased Morg once that we try to stay clear of his wishlist. But in fact, the wishlist is a great way to sway a vote. Meaning, if everyone really wants a specific fish, and we can do it, we will.

Sheesh, what does a guy have to do around here to get a little pity? Oh well!

Speaking of the wish list, Morgan, what's the current status on adding those fish I requested many many moons ago? I thought I read something some where on the forum not too long ago about you and Jav working on changes to it or something to that effect. I'm guessing that's why it hasn't seen an update since ... how long has it been anyway??? Are you guys working on changing the format? Just curious...

Also, Morgan, were you or Jav testing color schemes on the forum this morning? I was browsing and noticed that everything was in a nice deep blue color scheme, then it changed back to the green again shortly afterwards.

You're now able to pick the new "Blue" theme (actually created for the Mac forum) {EDIT:} in the Settings panel under Options near the bottom.

I have to agree with Robert. That one would be one of my never, or seldom, fish choices at least.
