The way Jim has worked out is how game companies deal with it, its really stupid way of programming but then again we are talking about Microsoft here, they never seem to do things straight forward.

I guess there is a reason to their madness?!

Is it a limit of the DirectX version you're using? I ask because I recall geometry instancing being a PS 3.0 feature and it sounds like what you're looking for is an equivalent for textures...

I'm using DX8/DX9. I'm not really looking for code to do this - it's not very hard to write, just drudgery. I was just amazed that the supposedly optimized code in the DX SDK didn't already do it. Someday we'll have code with its own artificial intelligence, whcih will say to itself, "hmmm...this same texture filename seems to be popping up rather often. Why don't I just use one of the instances I've already loaded?"

If we ever do its my bet that M$ won't be the one to design it.

Not unless it takes over the world and spawns a race of machines bent on killing humans.

But if they kill humans, who will buy their software? No, I'm sure that merely enslaving humans would satisfy them.

(Late news: I just did a deeper search of the DX SDK and found a texture-helper routine which does manage textures. The trouble was, their own code does not use it. That's my main problem with MS - no instructions. I guess all their Direct-X guys are planning to quit MS and write their own books, so they'd like to keep this stuff secret until they do.)

Hi Jim, just wondering how things're coming along with the learning curve. Are things getting clearer yet?

Excellent!

Maybe in your copious spare time you can write a user-friendly guide to DX for those still struggling.

As usual, the guy didn't say anything about the fact that it's SereneScreen, or where to get it.

I posted a comment on the video saying it would only be fair if he mentioned that the screensaver was made by Jim Sachs of www.serenescreen.com yesterday, but he just deleted it.
Thanks to Morgan, Tiny Snapshots is up and running again with "Tiny Järvafält" as the latest addition – Go have a look and tell me what you think.

"We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent.
I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says,
'Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.'
I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.

Video made with one of the most beautiful screensavers around. It was created by Jim Sachs at www.serenescreen.com. Well worth the money and they even have a version with a clock. A new version is also in the works. Muzik made with Korg Wavestation software. Visit my website at www.myspace.com/mars53muzik (more)
