Thumbs Up Standby Problem

I love SS, but since using it, my WinXP box will no longer automatically drop into standby mode. Is this a known issue, and can it be fixed?

Not at this time.

Actually, I thought that Will at Prolific had fixed this. I'll ask him about it.

Thanks!

Thanks Jim,

I have the latest version (1.1) of SS, my box is an XP with a gForce 3 card. I tried it on my machine at work which is Win2000 and it does the same thing. That box also has an nVidia card if that helps.

This is important in that I do not like my video card and monitors running all night, so what ever can be done would be greatly appreciated!

I am not 100% sure, more like 97%, that this problem may be solved by installing DirectX 9. I made no other changes to my (software) computer, but for the first time ever the monitor actually shut itself off!!! There were no performance increases (obivously) when I installed DirectX 9 , but it seemed to fix a lot annoyances I had with the system.

It's always been known to be a problem within Windows, but I thought Will had a work around. He hasn't gotten back to me yet.

Jim you may want to check out DirectX 9. After I installed it my monitor shuts down properly.

I’ve had this problem too which has always been annoying, but since I’ve updated to DirectX 9, my monitor shuts down as well. Sweet!

The monitor is one thing, the computer Standby is another. I notice this happens when I have certain applications open. I guess when Windows sees any activity whatsoever, it refuses to go into Standby mode.

Perhaps in SS preferences there can be a clock that you can command certain actions to occur such as shut down or standby. This way we are not depending on Windows but an actual hard code command.

BTW, Feldon pointed me to the latest update 1.1.7 and it did not fix the problem.

1.1.7 is one of the many test versions which we give out to people. The dual monitor version will be the next public "speed bump" release, with a version number of probably 1.1.9.

If you need 1.1.7, I can give it to you. It fixes a couple of issues:

On some sound cards/systems, when the Aquarium starts, even with the sound turned down to zero, it prevents any other application from making sound. A "don't initialize sound card" button was added (I think it's just called 'off' ).

On some systems, the Aquarium would end up hidden with the sound running but no tile in the taskbar so you couldn't close it. This has been fixed.

I've noticed the sound running sometimes with SSA hidden, other applications just run over the top and I end up with sounds from both ....so I've used task manager to close SSA ...be very grateful if you could let me have that version....thanks!

Sorry, the 1.1.7 was given to me on the quiet and I guess I should not have mentioned it yet. Sorry.

Still, the DirectX 9 does allow for monitor sleep, but not Standby. -- sigh.

Thanks Laser, but most of my experiments have been tested for less time. I think the real answer would be to have a standby event scheduler built into SereneScreen, that way it is not based on idle time but actual time.

Apparently this is a very deep "catch-22" situation within Windows. As I recall it was something about the system message to go into standy being interpreted as a system event, which keeps the machine from entering standy.

Jim,

That is why I thought that a hard code at a timed interval in SS would be a good thing to bypass this. For example, it could be set to go into Stanby at say midnight. That way the Power Manager would not be needed.

Laser,
Thanks for the research, but for this problem, it did not make a difference.
