Using The Tank as a benchmark tool would be cool
If Jim could write a routine with like 20-30 lion fish that runs for 1 min and give avg fps... just a thought
then give it to anand and others to bench with |

Hit the 'S' key to see your fps.

It would never work with that many fish at once. There isn't room for them.

Esquire, as Y.T. points out there's no need for a avg fps "result" after a minute. Since the number of polygons (or pretty much anything else) change over time, you/Anand/whoever could just check the fps at any given time and use that number.
Also, why would it be better with 20-30 (lion)fish than the current setup? /Tiny Benchmarking Thanks to Morgan, Tiny Snapshots is up and running again with "Tiny Järvafält" as the latest addition – Go have a look and tell me what you think.
"We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says, 'Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.' I suppose we all thought that, one way or another." /Robert Oppenheimer on witnessing the first thermonuclear detonation in history. |

just saying if jim had a bench mark button that you hit and it just loaded The Tank with fish, that were on a predetermined path for the bench run, to see what the fps were over the minute run. so on any system you' get to test the systems performAnce. it would be great for the overclock crowd...

Please don't make a benchmark out of it, the fps-button is enough for me, 30 fps :´(

what would it test?
The fps is fine for me too. If it wasn't there I’d suggest it, but nothing more is necessary. The aquarium wasn't designed to be a benchmark, what would it test? Remember it's based on dx6... No vertex or pixel shaders nothing very "advanced" as far as current technology goes. For what it IS though, it's very advanced, under a meg, truly amazing! Kudos to Jim for avoiding bloating this thing! I wish more programmers were like him. <rant>just because you have the power and resources to ignore optimization doesn't mean you should!</rant> Just goes to show you what "old" tech is capable of if under the direction of a highly skilled artist.
I’ll stick with madonion benchmarks to base my bragging rights on Last edited by drfish; 04-04-2002 at 12:40 PM. |

I build about 10 computers a year for various friends and family memebers, and I have been using the aquarium for a stress tester for new systems for about a year now. It runs the cpu at 100%, and at the same time it uses the videocard fairly fully, depending on your videocard. I find it to be a very good indication of the systems stability. If it'll run the aquarium for 24hours without any problems, chances are the the system is stable. Not exactly a benchmark, but a similar type use....
