Cool Poll: Are you running DirectX 3D 6, 7, or 8?

We want to leave 6, and 7 behind. But can we?

I think we'd get a lot more mileage posting this poll on SereneScreen.com or the fan site or anywhere where people don't have to have:

#1 found their way here (mostly enthusiasts and people with high-end, up-to-date PCs
#2 registered here on the forum (1% of visitors here actually register)

I'll e-mail Jim @ Prolific if you wish.

I'd vote on this poll, but you don't have the version of DirectX that I use as a choice. I use DirectX 9 beta.
Athlon XP 1600+
512 megs PC2100 DDR RAM
Gigabyte GA-7DXR
dual 40 gig Maxtor in RAID 0
Windows XP Professional
GeForce 4 ti4600 with nvidia 40.41 BETA reference drivers
Getting up to 80 fps in the saver at 1152 X 864 @ 75 hertz screen resolution.

I use 8.1 but 8 was close enough

I think we had one like this once before. We finally came up with the conclusions that Morgan gave. Most of the people here are tech. savy and try to keep up with the latest, so the poll is probably skewed.

Angry

So why not do the same thing a lot of games do, and include a copy of Directx 8.1 with the software to insure compatibility?

That's fine if it's on CD. Most sales are web sales.

You are SMART!

The problem is that a LOT of old cards are not compatible with DirectX 8, and MS made it a bear to install it, learn it fails--and then go back!

Lastly, very hard to explain to people how to do this. They just barely can install the product itself.

Got a tech support cal yesterday for someone that bought it at Fry’s, about 10 minutes in I asked “what is your OS?” he said…”X”

Ah…I see the problem now.

If you put it on the main site, you'd better give instructions for running DXDiag or something similar in order to find the DirectX version. I guarantee that most Average Joe Users won't know DirectX from the X-Files.

I use Direct X 8.1, why should I use 6 or 7 when there is a newer version?
Is Direct X 9 Beta faster than 8.1???
